The shape of alloys
is a sonification synthesizer for the acoustic representation of microstructures under the microscope.
The synthesizer consists of a PureData application that sonifies the imported images and presents them as a repetitive, rythmized sound structure. The shape of alloys makes use of various psychoacustic perception phenomena to enable a wide range of visual data to be sonified. Microstructures such as transitions in the particles, the shape of the particles and the general composition become audible and allow a direct insight into the nature of the material.
